About the museum
The Pinacoteca civica di Caravaggio has been housed since 1967 in Palazzo Gallavresi, which also houses the town hall. The palace, originally dating from the 13th century, was the noble residence of a branch of the Sforza family of Milan and, from the 16th to the end of the 18th century, the seat of power of the Marquisate of Caravaggio. It then passed through various owners until it was bought by the Gallavresi family, from whom it takes its name; in the 1930s the municipality bought it and made it the town hall. The many changes of ownership significantly altered the palace’s structure, interiors and appearance.
The collection includes works dating from the late 15th century to the 20th century: altarpieces, portraits, frescoes, drawings, bronze plaques and busts. Among the documented paintings are works by Giulio Cesare Procaccini and assistants, Andrea Lanzani, Stefano Maria Legnani, Giovanni Moriggia and Luigi Cavenaghi.
Admission is free and the building is free of architectural barriers. The gallery can be visited during the opening hours of the municipal offices, but only in certain parts of the palace; guided tours are organised in spring and autumn and on special occasions.
