About the museum

The Quadreria is housed in the Villa Comunale, which also houses the “Alessandro Manzoni” library. It is a villa di delizia (country pleasure villa) overlooking the Adda, which passed through several families before becoming the property of the Crivelli, a noble Milanese family. In 1860 Tiberio Crivelli transferred it to his brother Vitaliano, born in 1806, a patriot of the Risorgimento (Italian unification) and a patron of the arts.

Vitaliano Crivelli, close to the circle of the Accademia di Brera and tied to the painter Agostino Comerio, developed a taste rooted in Neoclassicism and gathered works of art to enrich the Trezzo residence. After it passed by inheritance to his son Ariberto and was sold to the Gardenghi family, in 1966 the villa passed to the municipality of Trezzo sull’Adda.

The collection was reorganised as a museum in 2014 and occupies three restored rooms of the villa. It holds paintings, prints, furnishings and restored objects, including a Madonna and Child on panel from the late 15th century, attributed to the circle of Bernardino de’ Conti, and, from the Neoclassical period, the large canvas by Giuseppe Bossi “Edipo cieco che incontra le figlie” and two paintings by Agostino Comerio. A copy of Bertel Thorvaldsen’s Schiller is also on display.
