About the museum
The collection was established in 1973 under the will of Carlo Lamberti, who died in 1961. Lamberti was a refined collector and also a painter, a friend of artists such as Giorgio Belloni, Paolo Troubetzkoy, Piero Belloni Betti, Giuseppe Novello and Arturo Tosi.
Twelve years after his death, the piano nobile (main floor) of the 17th-century Palazzo Lamberti in Codogno was turned into a picture gallery open to the public, with the works of his private collection. In 1988 the substantial collection of the painter Giuseppe Novello was also added, and over time donations and bequests have brought in other artists.
Visitors enter through the palazzo’s main doorway and climb the monumental staircase, where there is a replica of the Venus de Milo, up to the frescoed rooms of the piano nobile. Paintings, watercolours, drawings and sculptures range from the 16th century to the present day; sources give the number of works as between 122 and nearly 300. Among the highlights are two watercolours by Tranquillo Cremona, “Le curiose” and “Ripassando la lezione”, and works by Angelo Pietrasanta, Giorgio Belloni, Eugenio Gignous and Alessandro Bertamini.
