About the museum
The Musei delle Mura (Walls Museums) are permanent exhibitions run by the Gruppo Volontari Mura di Pizzighettone, the association that looks after the town’s walls on the Adda river. They collect and preserve material and intangible evidence of the town and its past, and are arranged on a single level. Management is entrusted to Gianfranco Gambarelli, historian and founding member of the association, assisted by the rural history expert Giacomo Bassi.
The Museo delle arti e mestieri di una volta “Fiorenzo Barili” (Museum of Traditional Arts and Crafts) holds a rich ethnographic collection on the life of the town in the last century: the river, the countryside, the processing of materials and daily life. Tools for grain farming and haymaking, the implements of the geraioli (local artisans), and sections on cheese-making and the production of artificial silk are on display.
The prison museum, the first of its kind in Lombardy, preserves the 36 single isolation cells, with the inscriptions and graffiti left by the prisoners. With objects, military materials and documents, it tells the story of the three periods in which the prison was in operation (1785–1858, 1915–1945 and 1946–1954) and the evolution of criminal history in Lombardy. For further reading, the book “Forche Galere Evasioni” is recommended.
