About the museum
The Real Collegio Carlo Alberto was founded in 1838 by King Carlo Alberto as an institution for the sons of the Piedmontese aristocracy and upper middle class, the future ruling class of the Kingdom of Sardinia. It rose a few kilometres from Turin, in the premises of an ancient convent, and has always been run by the Barnabite Fathers, who made it a centre of study attended by scientists, entrepreneurs and intellectuals.
The building has a monumental layout with atria, staircases, galleries and halls. Beside the neoclassical façade stands the meteorological observatory founded by Father Francesco Denza, an internationally known scientist. Of particular interest are the Galleria dei ritratti dei “Principi degli Studi” (Gallery of Portraits of the “Princes of Studies”), with the faces of illustrious students, and the museum collections, which include specimens of ornithology, mineralogy and antique scientific instruments.
Today the complex is an active cultural centre. Guided tours pass through the wide atrium with its marble floor bearing the royal coat of arms, the Sala Rossa, the Sala Gialla, the chapel from the 1930s, the monumental staircase and the second-floor gallery with the ornithological and ethnographic collections.
