About the museum
The shelter was built between 1942 and 1944 beneath Piazza Risorgimento and is among the largest of the more than forty public shelters built by the Comune di Torino. It was used during the bombing of 1944. After the war it was closed and forgotten for about fifty years, which helped preserve it as a place of remembrance.
The main body consists of three parallel galleries about 40 metres long, 4.5 metres wide and 3.3 metres high, connected by eight passages and located 12 metres below ground, with a visitable surface of about 550 square metres. It could accommodate 1,150 people, although during air-raid alarms its capacity was often doubled.
Rediscovered in 1995 and reopened the same year, it closed again for system upgrades and was reopened to the public on 27 February 2014. Today it is one of the city’s places of memory coordinated by the Museo Diffuso della Resistenza, which organises guided tours and educational activities, more frequent around the anniversary of the Liberation and during FAI events.
