About the museum
The Museo d’Arte Urbana grew out of a regeneration process in the Borgo Vecchio Campidoglio, a working-class district of the late 19th century. It was launched from the bottom up in 1991 by residents and committees. From 1995, with the consent of the owners of some buildings, the façades began to host permanent works.
The first eleven works were created in 1995–1996 on a voluntary basis; seventeen more followed in 1998 with an initial contribution from the City of Turin (Città di Torino). The MAU association was founded in 2000. In 2001 the museum joined the Carta Musei of the Piedmont Region, and the installations of the Galleria Campidoglio were added. The artistic direction has been entrusted from the outset to Edoardo Di Mauro.
From 2010 the project extended to other neighbourhoods of the city and gave rise to the “Panchine d’autore” projects, with decorated benches in Piazza Moncenisio. Today the museum has over 170 works at Borgo Campidoglio and about 60 in other areas, created by more than one hundred artists. Since 2018 it has collaborated with the network of Case di Quartiere (neighbourhood houses) and offers accessible routes also for visitors with sensory disabilities.
