About the museum
The Rocca Roveresca was built in 1350 as a small fortress commissioned by Cardinal Egidio Albornoz, who incorporated an ancient stone tower; the designer is not known. Towards the middle of the 15th century the architects active at the court of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta incorporated it into a new system of fortifications.
In the last quarter of the 15th century Giovanni Della Rovere, with the architects Luciano Laurana and Baccio Pontelli, gave it the imposing appearance it still preserves today. The site tells the history of the fortress also through its various uses over time: fortress, prison, orphanage, storehouse and finally museum.
Today the Rocca is a state cultural venue: the visit includes cellars, the Sala del Mastio, the ducal apartment, towers and moat, with an audioguide in Italian, a version for children aged 0 to 12 and in-depth information with scale models. It also hosts exhibitions and educational routes for schools.
