About the museum
The museum is housed in the former stables of Palazzo Monti Malvezzi, in the historic centre of Senigallia, within the bastioned pentagon built under Duke Guidobaldo. The palace was built in the first half of the 18th century for the merchant Matteo Monti; in 1727 Giovanni Paolo Monti set up the city’s first private theatre there. After restoration, overseen by Gabriele Ogiva, the building has regained its original appearance.
The collection presents antique toys from the 19th century to the post-war period, displayed in twenty-three cases along an art-historical route curated by the artistic director Elena Turchi. The display shows how toys mirrored the lives of adults, social differences and the differences between boys and girls. One case holds reproductions of toys and dolls from ancient Rome, including the doll of Crepereia Tryphaena, made by Lorenzo and Anna Marconi.
The museum premises also include a small theatre for cultural events and a literary café with art and literature books.
