About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Mastai Ferretti, where Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, the future Pope Pius IX, was born in 1792. It opened in 1892, on the occasion of the centenary of the pope's birth, and closed after the earthquake of 1972. After a ceiling in the piano nobile (main floor) collapsed in 1974, the Diocese of Senigallia obtained the perpetual use of the palace and carried out a major restoration of the ceilings and decorative features, completed in January 1976.
The museum reopened on 8 February 1976, with paintings, furniture, memorabilia, prints, tapestries and medal collections rearranged in the rooms of the piano nobile. The same palace, which today houses several diocesan institutions, also contains the library on the ground floor and the Pinacoteca d'arte sacra diocesana, a diocesan gallery of sacred art, which opened in December 1976.
The route preserves the memory of the Mastai family and of the life and work of Pius IX: the reception hall with canvases of the Old Testament, the amnesty hall of 16 July 1846, the room in which the pope was born, a small chapel with a Madonna by Sassoferrato, and the rooms with medals and commemorative coins minted between 1846 and 1878.
