About the museum
In 1989, during the foundation works for the new Teatro La Fenice, the remains of a sector of the ancient Roman city of Sena Gallica, dating from the 2nd–3rd century AD, came to light a few metres below street level. The structures were preserved and made visitable beneath the theatre building.
The route, along walkways, shows the crossing of a cardo and a decumanus, with the ruts left by cartwheels in the paving, several tabernae (including a shop selling food and hot drinks) and a large domus with cocciopesto floors and an atrium with an impluvium. About 130 medieval burials are also documented, one of which is preserved in situ for educational purposes.
Along the route are displayed finds from the excavations carried out in Senigallia over the past century. The area is run by the Comune di Senigallia as part of the city’s museum circuit.
