About the museum
The Sala Storica della Resistenza was founded in 1983 on the initiative of former partisans of the ANPI in Villadossola, who, after three years of research and collecting materials, set it up and opened it at the premises on Via XXV Aprile. It commemorates in particular 8 November 1943, the day of the first popular uprising in Fascist Italy, which took place in Villadossola itself.
The route opens with a display case devoted to the Fascist ventennio (the two decades of Fascist rule) and continues with photographs of the fallen of the province. In the main hall the history of the local Resistance is told through several hundred documents, mostly period photographs, relating to all the formations active in Ossola: the Garibaldini, the Valtoce and the Valdossola. Educational panels illustrate the key moments of the liberation struggle; a model of a crematorium oven from Dachau and documents on deportation allow visitors to explore this aspect too.
The ANPI has begun digitising the archive, with documents, images and interviews with partisans, and keeps a library of over 350 volumes. The hall has never wanted to be considered a static museum, but a place where people meet history, for schools, groups and associations.
