About the museum
The museum is run by the Fondazione Annalisa Buccellato and is housed in the Arab-Norman Castle of Castellammare del Golfo, which it shares with the Museo dell’acqua e dei mulini ad acqua. In 2014 the Assessorato regionale dei Beni culturali (Regional Department for Cultural Heritage) recognised the Foundation’s particularly important ethnoanthropological interest.
The collections document aspects of Sicilian civilisation: everyday objects linked to the most widespread crops (cereals, vines, olive trees), tools of traditional trades such as blacksmith, shoemaker, mason, carpenter, cooper and tanner, household utensils and furnishings, together with four sections devoted to human presence in the territory of Castellammare, with archaeological finds recovered from the sea. Ancient working techniques, largely lost with industrialisation, are presented in small thematic rooms.
