About the museum
The Teatro dell’Aquila in Fermo was designed by Cosimo Morelli and built between 1780 and 1790. It replaced an earlier wooden theatre housed in what is now the Sala dei Ritratti of the Palazzo dei Priori, which was destroyed by fire. The first performance took place on 26 September 1790.
The hall is laid out with 124 boxes on five tiers. The ceiling frescoes and the curtain are by Luigi Cochetti, while the paintings in the entrance were carried out by Alessandro Sanquirico in 1830. The building was restored in 1997 and is still an active theatre, among the largest historic theatres in the Marche.
