About the museum
The archaeological museum of Fermo originates from the private museum of the brothers Gaetano and Raffaele De Minicis, born in Falerone at the end of the 18th century and active in Fermo in the first half of the 19th century. Their eclectic collection has roots partly in the 18th-century tradition of Wunderkammern (cabinets of curiosities) and partly in the Neoclassical cult of antiquity.
The route unfolds in six rooms that tell the story of the birth of archaeological collecting: from the passion for antiquity (room 1) to Giuseppe Colucci’s “Antichità Picene” (room 2), from the De Minicis private collection (room 3) to the unauthorised excavations at the Roman theatre of Falerio Picenus (room 4), then the illustrious correspondence (room 5) and the transition from private collecting to the public museum (room 6).
From the museum you can also access the Cisterne Romane di Fermo (Roman Cisterns of Fermo), with entry from Via Paccarone 36.
