About the museum
The Tempietto stands in the hamlet of Pissignano, in Campello sul Clitunno, above one of the springs of the Clitunno river, a sacred area in ancient times dedicated to Jupiter Clitumnus and celebrated by Pliny the Younger. For a long time it was considered a Roman shrine; today it is regarded as a Christian building dedicated to the Saviour, whose dating ranges from the 4th–5th century to a Lombard period between the early 7th century and the following century.
The façade has four Corinthian columns, two of them with spiral fluting, and an architrave with rare monumental inscriptions in capital letters. Inside, the vaulted cella with an apse is framed by a marble aedicule that reuses 1st-century sculptures and carved slabs of the Lombard period. It holds the oldest Christian frescoes in Umbria, including a Saviour between the saints Peter and Paul.
In the Renaissance the monument was studied and drawn by artists and architects such as Palladio, Piranesi and Vanvitelli. Since 2011 it has been part of the serial UNESCO site “Longobardi in Italia: i luoghi del potere”.
