About the museum
The San Francesco museum complex occupies the former Franciscan convent of Trevi, in the historic centre. The convent dates from the 13th century and was rebuilt and decorated in the first half of the 17th century; the cloister is frescoed by Bernardino Gagliardi. The museum was opened in October 1996 and also includes the church of San Francesco, built over an older church of 1268.
The Raccolta d’arte di San Francesco holds works of the Umbrian school of the 13th and 14th centuries and canvases from the 16th to the 18th century, among them the “Assumption of the Virgin” by Alessandro Turchi, a processional banner by a follower of Niccolò Alunno and the “Coronation of the Virgin” by Giovanni di Pietro (1522). Many works entered the collection after the confiscation of Church property following Italian unification. On the ground floor is the archaeological section, with Italic and Roman finds and grave goods from a Lombard necropolis.
The Museo della Civiltà dell’Ulivo is dedicated to DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) extra virgin olive oil and to olive cultivation, with panels, multimedia stations, olive-processing machines and an audio guide. The complex is part of the city’s museum circuit, which also includes Villa Fabri and Palazzo Lucarini.
