About the museum
The Centro di documentazione territoriale, also known as the Museo del Territorio, is a small exhibition space at the entrance to the village of Parrano, on the ground floor of the primary school building. It offers an overview of local history in four sections.
The first concerns the geology of the area and the formation of the ravine in which the Tane del Diavolo open, a complex of karst caves. The second tells the story of the excavations in the caves and presents their finds, which range from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Late Bronze Age. The third is devoted to the Archaic tomb of the 6th–5th century BC discovered at Podere Soriano, with some of its grave goods, including vessels of the Orvieto group. The last section illustrates, with archival documents and photographs, the history of the castrum of Parrano from the Middle Ages to the modern period, including pages of the statute of 1559.
The visit can be combined with the excursion to the Tane del Diavolo, caves from which the oldest finds in the Orvieto area come; the excursion accompanied by expert speleologists is possible by appointment. Nearby, a thermal spring rises at about 28°C.
