About the museum
The Via Angelica takes its name from an ancient path along the side of the church of the Santi Jacopo e Lucia, which farmers used to reach the town from the countryside. Today this name refers to a visitor route comprising three underground rooms in the heart of San Miniato, reached through a small wrought-iron door on Piazza del Popolo, next to the church of San Domenico.
The first room is a bay of the crypt, with remains of frescoes partly attributed to Jacopo di Cione. The second is the Oratorio di Sant'Urbano, used by a confraternity known as “della frusta” (of the whip), which venerated a wooden crucifix of the saint to obtain protection of the fields from natural disasters. The third is the chapel of San Pietro Martire, also called the Aula Pacis, which preserves parts of a 14th-century cycle of frescoes with scenes of the Passion.
The rooms, with decorations dating from the 14th to the 18th century, are part of the Sistema Museale di San Miniato, run by the municipality and the Diocese, which offers a route through the artistic sites of the historic centre. Visits are by booking.
