About the museum
Villa Carpena, also called Villa Mussolini, is located in San Martino in Strada, a hamlet of Forlì, about 13 km from Predappio. It was the residence of Benito Mussolini, his wife Rachele Guidi and their five children. Rachele bought a farmhouse in 1914 and other land in 1921; the villa itself was built in 1923. After 1943 the property was seized by the State and later housed war evacuees; Rachele returned in 1957 and lived there until her death in 1979.
In 2000 the villa was bought by a couple of entrepreneurs from the province of Lodi, who converted it into a private museum opened on 29 July 2001 under the name “Villa Mussolini – Casa dei ricordi” (House of Memories). The museum holds original relics of the Ventennio (the twenty years of Fascism), personal objects and furnishings of the family, works of art and vehicles, and, on the upper floor, a study centre with a library named after Romano Mussolini.
The complex includes the farmhouse, the villa spread over three levels, and a garden with statues, vegetable gardens and aviaries.
