About the museum
The museum, named after the ethnographer Benedetto Pergoli, presents the history, traditions and culture of Romagna through tools, objects and evidence of everyday life and traditional work. The first core of the collection was founded in 1922; a new section was added in 1964.
The collection was originally spread over two venues: the Palazzo del Merenda on Corso della Repubblica and Palazzo Gaddi on Corso Garibaldi. In 2004, following the restoration of Palazzo Gaddi, the objects displayed there were moved to a storage facility in Villafranca.
In the Palazzo del Merenda, the osteria, the cellar, domestic interiors and craft workshops (cobbler, hatter, tailor, potter, luthier, blacksmith, goldsmith) have been reconstructed, alongside a room dedicated to Romagna textiles. The corridors hold collections of caveje, rustic 17th-century furniture, ceramics with devotional plaques and bridal trousseaux from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
