About the museum
Villa Saffi, in the hamlet of San Varano in Forlì, was originally owned by the Jesuits. In 1740 Count Tommaso Saffi, great-grandfather of Aurelio, bought it as a summer residence. In the 19th century the villa was a meeting place of the Carbonari, who gave it the code name “Vendita dell’Amaranto” (Amaranth lodge).
Aurelio Saffi, a patriot of the Risorgimento and friend of Giuseppe Mazzini, lived here for many years and died here on 10 April 1890. In 1937 the painter Amerigo Bartoli decorated some rooms with trompe-l’œil wall paintings.
Since 1988 the villa has been a house museum owned by the Municipality of Forlì and preserves rooms and furnishings linked to the Saffi family and the memory of Aurelio. At present the interior is not accessible because of renovation work; only the garden is open.
