About the museum

The San Domenico complex comprises a church, a first closed cloister and a second cloister open on one side. The original church, dating from the 13th century, was enlarged in the Renaissance and renovated in 1704. In the Napoleonic era it was deconsecrated and put to military use, and it became state property between 1866 and 1867. The decay that followed was halted only in the 1990s, with a comprehensive restoration that made it the seat of the civic museum and of the major exhibitions. The museum has been active as an exhibition venue since 2005.

In the cloisters and the long corridors are the Civic Picture Gallery, with masterpieces such as Canova’s Ebe, the Fiasca con fiori, the Dama dei gelsomini by Lorenzo di Credi and an important group of works by Marco Palmezzano, as well as works by Beato Angelico, Rossellino and Cagnacci. The museum also holds the Pedriali collection, with Flemish paintings and works by Giovanni Fattori and Alessandro Magnasco.

The sections devoted to the great donors, opened in 2025 partly in the former church of San Giacomo, and the Verzocchi collection, with more than seventy Italian 20th-century paintings on the theme of work, complete the route. The complex also hosts the major exhibitions organised by the Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi di Forlì.
