About the museum

The Museo di Ecologia e Centro visitatori opened in November 2003 in the historic centre of Meldola, near the medieval Rocca. It is housed in the 16th-century church of the Madonna del Sasso, restored with funding from the Emilia-Romagna Region (Parks and Forest Resources Service) and the municipality of Meldola. The museum is named after Mirco Bravaccini.

The centre is organised in three parts: a natural history museum with geological, mineralogical and palaeontological finds, as well as flora, fauna and fungi displayed in cases; a space for educational activities, meetings and workshops, equipped with scientific and multimedia tools; and an information point on the Bosco di Scardavilla nature reserve and the other provincial, regional and national protected areas.

The exhibition route illustrates the biodiversity of the main forest landscapes of Italy, from the Alps to the Apennines, from the Po Valley to the Mediterranean coasts, with taxidermied specimens and short captions on how organisms adapt to different environments. The collections also include Romagna's natural history finds and data.
