About the museum
Palazzo Altieri in Oriolo Romano is a patrician residence of the 16th and 17th centuries, conceived as a villa-fortress on the model of Palazzo Farnese at Caprarola. The building has four floors, two corner bastions and a U-shaped plan that faces the village’s main square.
The museum occupies the piano nobile (main floor). Among its most important rooms are the Sala degli Avi and the Galleria dei Papi, about 70 metres long, which houses portraits of the popes. Several rooms preserve paintings and Neoclassical decoration, while the frescoes with scenes from the Old Testament are attributed to the late-Mannerist painter Giovanni Baglione.
The palace is now managed by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Lazio of the Ministry of Culture and hosts guided tours, evening openings and events for the European Museum Night.
