About the museum
Villa Magherini Graziani stands on a hill above the Tiber valley, at Celalba in the municipality of San Giustino. It was built at the start of the 17th century by Carlo Graziani, of a family originating from Sansepolcro, to a design by the Tuscan architect Antonio Cantagallina, a pupil of Vasari. The building, in a late Renaissance style, has a square plan on three floors, with a tower about 17 metres high and a central three-arched loggia inspired by that of the nearby Bufalini castle. It is built on older structures, including a medieval fortification.
The complex was bought by the municipality of San Giustino in 1982; a project of consolidation and enhancement was completed in 2008. The garden retains its 17th-century layout, with terraces, a central fountain and an avenue of cypresses, and forms part of a historic park of about 6 hectares.
Since December 2013 the villa has housed the Museo archeologico della Villa di Plinio il Giovane: on the first floor are excavation models, three-dimensional reconstructions and the most significant finds from the excavations at Colle Plinio, where the Latin writer’s villa “in Tuscis” stood. A permanent section also presents works by Bruno Bartoccini and Attilio Pierelli.
