About the museum

The museum opened on 23 May 2003 at the wish of the Comune di Sansepolcro and the cathedral chapter. The display was curated by Franco Dall’Ara. It is housed in the deconsecrated church of San Giovanni Battista, a building of medieval origin documented from 1126 that was also once known as San Giovanni d’Afra. It covers an area of about 300 square metres.

The collection brings together mainly works made between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, from the collection of Giuseppina Bernardini and the donation of Luigi Fatti. It includes 23 medium and large stained-glass windows and about a hundred fragments, alongside a section on the art of painted glass, with materials and tools from craft workshops and texts on the history, making and restoration of stained-glass windows.

The museum also owns a collection of sketches and forty engravings from the late 18th century that reproduce the Chantilly windows after designs by Raphael. Among the most important works are a life-size reproduction of Leonardo’s Last Supper, made by Rosa and Cecilia Caselli between 1937 and 1942, and a large English crucifixion in the Pre-Raphaelite style, probably based on a design by William Morris.
