About the museum
The house stands a few steps from the Duomo of Sansepolcro and had belonged to Piero della Francesca's family since at least the mid-14th century. Here the painter lived and worked for much of his life and wrote his treatises on mathematics and perspective. The building was extended around the mid-15th century, and it is thought that Piero had a role in its design.
In the following centuries the palace changed hands several times. A fresco of Hercules, which decorated a room on the first floor, was removed from the wall and sold: since 1908 it has belonged to the collection of Isabella Stewart Gardner in Boston. In 1975 the property was bought by the Italian State and restored by the Soprintendenza of Arezzo.
Today the house is the seat of the Fondazione Piero della Francesca, a centre for study and documentation on the artist. It holds no original paintings by Piero: the visit is based on multimedia displays and digital reproductions that recount the life and works of the painter, among rooms with cross vaults, wooden ceilings, a cloister with a well and a loggia overlooking the historic centre.
