About the museum

The Casa delle Farfalle di Collodi, opened in 2007, is a greenhouse rebuilt as a tropical garden within the Storico Giardino Garzoni complex, run by the Fondazione Nazionale Carlo Collodi together with the nearby Parco di Pinocchio. The glazed building, described by the Foundation as a crystal casket, houses exotic plants and a microclimate that recreates the environment of tropical and equatorial regions.

Inside live hundreds of butterflies and moths, free to fly, feed and breed. Small birds keep insect and spider predators away without touching either caterpillars or butterflies. Visitors can observe all stages of development, from egg to butterfly, the differences between day-flying butterflies and night-flying moths, and the defensive and communicative meaning of the colours and patterns of the wings.

The route is completed by an introductory film, large panels and some display cases. In the greenhouse there is also a beehive that can be observed through a glass wall, as well as other insects, such as stick insects. The House offers educational routes on biodiversity and workshops for children, as well as cultural events.
