About the museum

The village of Capo Graziano lies on the island of Filicudi, in the Aeolian Islands, on a broad terrace at about 100 metres above sea level on the Montagnola di Capo Graziano (174 m). During the second phase of the Capo Graziano culture (around 1700 BC) the inhabitants moved from the coastal village of Filo Braccio, in the Piano del Porto, to the natural terraces of the slope, probably out of fear of sudden raids from the sea.

Excavations, carried out from 1952 to 1969, brought to light 27 closely spaced oval huts, 3–6 metres in diameter, with dry-stone walls about 50–60 cm thick and floors sunk into the ground. In hut XII the richest set of whole vessels from the site was recovered. Among the materials are imported Aegean pottery (Late Helladic I–II), which documents trade relations with the Mycenaean world. Later the southern part was reorganised in the phase of the Thapsos-Milazzese culture.

The finds are displayed in the Museo archeologico eoliano Luigi Bernabò Brea in Lipari and in the Filicudi Porto branch section, housed in a traditional two-storey island house with five rooms: the Bronze Age, the Greco-Roman period, marine archaeology with amphorae and anchor stocks from the island’s wrecks, lead anchors and the “Lighea” series by Alessandro La Motta, and ethnoanthropology. In 2026 the Parco archeologico delle Isole Eolie announced the resumption of investigations at the village after almost sixty years.
