About the museum
The Museo Diocesano di Lipari is located in the bishop’s palace, with entrance from Via Madre Florenzia Profilio. It holds works from the 16th century onwards from the various churches of the Aeolian Islands, which were the seat of an independent diocese until 1986. Among the first figures recorded in the religious history of the archipelago is Saint Agatho, who according to tradition received in 264 the body of the apostle Bartholomew, which had arrived by sea.
The idea of housing a diocesan museum for the artistic and historical heritage of the Aeolian churches in the palace arose after consolidation work on the building. In August 2020, on the initiative of Archbishop Giovanni Accolla, the first four rooms of the picture gallery were opened. Three further rooms for silverware and vestments were opened later, together with the small chapel once reserved for the bishop.
The entrance and each of the six rooms are dedicated to the memory of a bishop of Lipari. From the entrance hall a three-flight stone staircase leads to the first floor, where the paintings are arranged by historical period and the sacred vestments and liturgical objects are displayed by type in showcases.
