About the museum
The history museum of the Ģintermuiža hospital serves as an open window onto the past of mental health care. It was opened as part of the hospital in 1977 by the psychiatrist Arnolds Laksbergs, who carefully documented his own and other people's life courses in this institution; documenting the development of the hospital remains the museum's main task.
The exhibition includes old medical objects and household equipment, photographs from various periods, items made in occupational therapy – door handles, teapots, pipes – and artworks from the former patients' painting studio “Iztēle” (Imagination). Visitors learn about the founding and development of the hospital from 1887 to the present day, the treatment methods once used, and the memories of former staff and patients.
