About the museum
The Andreja Upīša memoriālmāja in Skrīveri is the former home of the writer Andrejs Upīts (1877–1970). Upīts built the house in 1908; during the First World War it was damaged, and in 1917 it was burned down. From 1921 the family restored the house on the old foundations, following the writer's own drawings. In 1952 Upīts donated the house to the state, and a museum was set up in it.
The exhibition tells of the writer's life and work in the early 20th century, as well as in the 1920s and 1930s; a large part of his most important pre-war works and translations was written in Skrīveri.
The house is surrounded by a garden that the writer planted himself, choosing hazel, linden, oak, silver birch, nut trees and other trees and shrubs. Concerts and discussions take place in the garden, and pupils' educational lessons are also held there.
