About the museum
Andris Kārkliņš – Andres El Leton (1942–2011) was a flamenco guitarist, composer, poet, photographer and world traveller. Born in 1942 in Jelgava municipality, he emigrated with his parents to America in 1944, later went to Spain to become a flamenco guitarist, and became the first internationally recognised flamenco guitarist of Latvian origin. Late in life he returned to his homeland and bought the property “Zuši” in Kaltene by the sea, where he became involved in Latvian cultural and public life.
After the artist’s death, and in keeping with his wishes, a memorial house was set up. On the ground floor there is an exhibition with photographs, sound recordings, books, films and the artist’s personal belongings. Admission is charged. Visitors are welcomed with stories about his life and work as well as audio and video recordings; in addition, they can taste and buy products from Kaltene’s home producers.
