About the museum
One of the most notable Latvian poets, Eduards Veidenbaums (1867–1892), lived, studied, worked and died at “Kalāči”; it was his home from the age of five. The memorial museum was officially founded in 1958, although admirers of the poet had visited here long before that.
The farmstead has preserved a granary, a residential house and centenarian oaks, which witnessed the poet’s life. The open-air exhibition is available all year round and is complemented by stories recorded by the writer Andris Akmentiņš. In season the exhibition “Vairāk gaismas!” (More Light!) is on view, revealing the poet’s values, poetry and personality.
The culture barn houses an ethnographic exhibition and Vidzeme chests, while changing contemporary art exhibitions are shown in the “burnt wing”. Each year the museum holds Museum Night in May, Eduards’ name day on the last Sunday of May, and a birthday gathering on the first Sunday of October.
