About the museum
The Kurzemes cietokšņa muzejs in Zante opened in 1996. It is a private initiative, and the museum is a member of the Latvijas Muzeju biedrība (Latvian Museums Association). The exhibition tells of the role of the Courland Pocket (Kurzemes cietoksnis) in the Second World War and of the later fate of Latvian soldiers.
The permanent exhibition is mainly devoted to the final phase of the Second World War and to the battles in Kurzeme in 1944 and 1945. A separate history exhibition displays objects from the First and Second World Wars related to local history and troops.
On the museum grounds, trenches and bunkers from that period have been restored. Visitors can test themselves on a military obstacle course, and a rest area with picnic facilities has been set up by the pond.
