About the museum
The Jaunpils muzejs was founded in 1991 and is in the west wing of the Jaunpils medieval castle, the oldest part of the castle. The museum keeps and researches the cultural-historical heritage of the Jaunpils and Viesate parishes, from the beginnings of the castle’s history to the present day.
The exhibition is spread over three floors and tells of the history of the Jaunpils region, its manors and the castle. On view are models of the Livonian Order castles of Jaunpils and Dobele, copies of weapons and armour, archaeological finds and a coin collection, as well as the Bruņinieku pagrabiņš (Knights’ Cellar) and the Pilskunga kabinets (Castle Lord’s Study).
In the museum’s exhibition hall, changing exhibitions show works by professional local artists and craftspeople, and creative workshops and meetings with authors take place. There is also an inn and a hotel in the castle, and theatricalised tours and medieval performances are possible.
