About the museum
The Kandavas novadpētniecības muzejs was founded on 17 November 1995 thanks to the initiative of the historian and teacher at the Kandava boarding secondary school, Viktors Vītols, and the material he had collected. At first it was called the Kandavas muzejs (Kandava Museum), later the Kandavas novada muzejs (Kandava Municipal Museum), and now the Kandavas novadpētniecības muzejs (Kandava Local History Museum).
The museum collects, stores and researches materials on the town of Kandava and on the parishes of Cēre, Matkule, Valdeķi, Vāne, Zante and Zemīte, from the earliest times to the present day.
The museum displays the exhibitions “Ar zirgu uz Kandavas tirgu” (By Horse to the Kandava Market) and “Valodiņa – Dieva dota, vietu vārdi – izdomāti” (The Language Is God-Given, the Place Names Invented; in memory of K. Mīlenbahs), a memorial room for the people of the Kandava municipality who were repressed, a model of the old town of Kandava (mid-19th to early 20th century), and a digital exhibition on the history of the old town with the game “Senajā Tirgus laukumā” (On the Old Market Square). On request you can taste Kandava acorn coffee.
