About the museum
The Audēju darbnīca (Weavers' Workshop) is a branch of the Tukums Museum, offering the chance to learn weaving skills, ethnographic traditions and the process of making textile products. More than 40 looms can be seen on site in the workshop, including 19th-century mechanical looms – the trizuļu (treadle) and lever looms – and the semi-automatic looms of the early 20th century, known as Vilumsons looms.
The interactive exhibition “No vilnas līdz audumam” (From Wool to Fabric) is based on the weaving process at the looms. Under the wing of the workshop works the folk applied-art studio “Durbe”, whose members research and make folk costumes and build up ethnographic costume collections for the Tukums Museum.
The workshop offers individual and group training, lessons for pupils and adults, creative workshops, further training courses and advice on choosing and making folk costumes. Souvenirs and products by the Tukums weavers and other needlewomen are on sale.
