About the museum
Jaunmoku Palace was built in 1901 to a design by the architect Vilhelms Bokslafs as the hunting palace of Džordžs Armitsteds, mayor of Rīga. Its Art Nouveau interior is enriched by tiled stoves; a painted stove with views of Rīga and Jūrmala attracts particular attention.
The decision to create a Forest Museum in the palace was taken already during the restoration in 1974, and the palace rooms and the first exhibition of forestry tools opened to visitors in 1991. Since 2004 the Jaunmoku pils muzejs has been an accredited museum, and it is now managed by the joint-stock company “Latvijas valsts meži” (Latvian State Forests).
On the ground floor are exhibitions on the Art Nouveau interiors, the history of the estate and the Armitsteds family; on the first floor is an exhibition on Latvia’s forests, the history of their management and their significance in human life. Visitors can also climb the palace tower, which is about 20 metres high.
