About the museum
The museum was founded in 1959 as a branch of the Ludza Local History Museum and was housed in the building where the Central Museum of Latgale had been located until the Second World War. From 1960 it operated independently as the Rēzeknes Novadpētniecības muzejs (Rēzekne Local History Museum), and in 1990 it received its present name.
In 1996 the neighbouring three-storey building was handed over to the museum, and an Exhibition House (Izstāžu nams) was created in it. In 2010, with funds from the European Regional Development Fund and the city council, the museum was reconstructed and a new extension was built, linking the historic building and the Exhibition House into one complex.
The collection contains more than 70,000 cultural-historical, art and ethnographic objects. The museum also houses a scientific reading room and the Andrejs Paulāns Folk Applied Art Studio.
