About the museum
The museum began in 1918, when artefacts from the excavations of the Ludza hillfort and Odu kalns were first exhibited. Since 1956 the museum has been located on the estate of the family of Major General Jakovs Kuļņevs, a hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, on the shore of Lake Mazais Ludzas.
The museum has seven exhibition rooms, an open-air department and an ethnography department; around 5,000 exhibits are on display. Around 40,000 objects in 17 collections are kept in the closed storage. The foundations of the open-air and ethnography departments were laid in 1957. In 2016 the Ludzas Lielā sinagoga (Ludza Great Synagogue) was added to the museum.
