About the museum
The Ludzas Lielā sinagoga (Ludza Great Synagogue) was built around 1800, and its age is confirmed by dendrochronological dating (the most recent wood ring formed in 1781). Because a large share of the original wooden structure has survived, it is the oldest synagogue in Latvia and the Baltic states. In the third quarter of the 19th century the building was clad in clay bricks. It was one of the few buildings not affected by the great fire of Ludza in 1938.
The building served as a house of prayer until the 1980s and has kept its original layout, with an entrance hall, a prayer hall, a women's prayer room and cult objects from the 18th and 19th centuries. The restored wooden board dome is the only one of its kind preserved in the Baltic region.
In 2013 the synagogue was included in the state list of protected cultural monuments. The restoration, carried out from March 2015 to January 2016, was part of a project with the Hordalandas Muzeju centrs (Hordaland Museum Centre) in Norway. Since 2016 the synagogue has been a branch of the Ludzas Novadpētniecības muzejs (Ludza Local History Museum).
