About the museum

The Limbažu muzejs (Limbaži Museum) officially began work on 1 January 1983 as the Limbažu novadpētniecības muzejs (Limbaži Local History Museum). In 2001 the town council decided to rename it the Limbažu muzejs. The museum's mission is to identify, research and preserve the cultural and historical heritage of the town of Limbaži and its region, with particular emphasis on the contribution of Baumaņu Kārlis, author of the Latvian national anthem.

The museum's exhibition halls and history exhibition are located in the Rīgas rātes jaunā pils (New Castle of the Riga Town Council), built at the beginning of the 19th century, which is also the building of the Pilsmuiža estate manager, at Burtnieku iela 7. Here you can see the exhibition “Pilsēta, novads, jūra” (Town, Region, Sea) on the history of the town of Limbaži and its surroundings, and the exhibition “Baumaņu Kārlis un viņa laiks” (Baumaņu Kārlis and His Time). Two temporary exhibition halls regularly host travelling exhibitions, exhibitions made by museum staff and art exhibitions.

The old fire station at Torņa iela 3 (Vecais ugunsdzēsēju depo) houses the open collection storage, and the castle ruins viewing tower (Pilsdrupu skatu tornis) offers a view from above of the site of Limbaži's medieval castle.
