About the museum
On the initiative of the association “Pulkveža Kalpaka bataljons” (Colonel Kalpaks Battalion), construction of a building for the Colonel Oskars Kalpaks Museum opposite the memorial site at Airītes began in summer 1935, and it was opened on 6 September 1936. The building housed an exhibition on the combat history of the Kalpaks Battalion. During the Soviet occupation the memorial ensemble was destroyed, but the memorial site was restored in 1989. The museum resumed work on 11 November 1990.
From 1991 to 2006 the memorial site was a branch of the Saldus vēstures un mākslas muzejs (Saldus History and Art Museum), and since 2 January 2007 it has been a department of the Latvijas Kara muzejs. In 2013 a newly created exhibition was opened, reflecting the personality of Colonel Oskars Kalpaks and his activities during the First World War and the Latvian War of Independence.
