About the museum
The Piena muzejs is located in the Piena muiža “Berghof” complex in Sieksāte, and it is the only dairy museum in Latvia. About 250 exhibits are on display, brought from various places, from collective farms and received as donations from dairy farms and interested people. Some of the exhibits were bequeathed to the museum by the long-time Latvian dairy farmer Žanis Sesks, and others were found in the attics of old houses. Many of the objects were restored during the creation of the museum.
One of the most valuable exhibits is a gift from the Queen of the United Kingdom to Latvian dairy producers for the best export butter in the 1930s – a butter box of that time. Since 2014 the museum has been home to the talking wooden cow Venta, made especially for it, together with her calf Druvis, who explains how milk is produced; she was made by hand by the Italian artist Teo Mahlknehts (Theo Mahlknecht).
