About the museum
The Salacgrīvas muzejs was founded in 1998. From 1 March 2019 it operated as the Salacgrīva municipality museum with one territorial unit – the Ainažu Ugunsdzēsības muzejs (Ainaži Fire Brigade Museum) – but in 2021, by decision of the Limbaži municipal council, it was renamed the Salacgrīvas muzejs.
The museum collects and preserves material and intangible evidence of the history of Salacgrīva, Ainaži and the nearest surroundings from the earliest times to the present day, paying particular attention to fishing and the ancient traditions of lamprey fishing on the Salaca. Its mission is to show the historic heritage of the area in the context of the Livonian cultural space of Vidzeme.
The main exhibition “Lībiskā piederība” tells the history and traditions of Salacgrīva and its surroundings from prehistory to 1985. The museum has an interactive section with folding pictures and three quizzes, as well as virtual exhibitions.
