About the museum
The roots of the idea of the Purvīša muzejs go back to the early 20th century, when the artist’s teachers, art researchers and local people proposed setting up a museum for the landscape painter Vilhelms Purvītis. The exhibition “Vecjaužos” already existed in 1972, and in 2007 the site was included in the Latvian Cultural Canon. In 2021 the Imants Ziedonis foundation “Viegli” received the family home “Vecjauži” of Purvītis as a donation and officially set up the museum; in 2024 the museum’s statutes were approved.
Today the museum operates in “Vecjauži” as a place for experiencing cultural heritage in nature, and in Rīga, at Sporta iela 2, as a research and collection centre. The family home is open during the season, while the open-air gallery with the exhibition “Septiņi gudrie” and the landscape trail “Purvīša acīm” is accessible at any time.
