About the museum
The collection of the Saulkrastu velosipēdu muzejs has been built up since 1977. It brings together the most technically interesting examples from the history of bicycle development found in Latvia, and the largest collection of bicycle badges in Eastern Europe, with more than 800 exhibits from all over the world.
The collection includes one of the first bicycles – the high-wheeler “Simplex”, made in the Netherlands in 1886 – as well as the “Coventry”, made in England, the first bicycle with inflatable tyres, and the “Safety” model from the A. Leitner factory, which was the first bicycle factory in Latvia. A unique exhibit is a wooden bicycle built in 1940 as a single example in the VEF sports aircraft workshop, designed by the aviation engineer Kārlis Irbītis. The collection is continuously supplemented with new exhibits.
