About the museum
Svētes pils (Svēte Palace) was built in the 18th century as the residence of the Duke of Courland Pēteris Bīrons. It was notable for its magnificent interior, a broad picture gallery and a large orangery with exotic plants; it was here that Duke Pēteris Bīrons proposed to his Dorothea. Restoration work is currently under way at the palace, and visitors can see an exhibition room and a glass workshop, where, under the guidance of a master, vessels and decorative objects can be made in a glass-melting furnace.
